It is my pleasure in welcoming you all to the grand finale of the maiden edition of the First Lady Golf Tournament which kicked off on Monday 12th March, 2012.
My deep appreciation goes to Mrs. Bosede Ransome-Kuti and all the members of Ikeja Ladies Golf Club for introducing me to one of the best games in the world of sports; and bestowing on me an honourary membership of the club. With their encouragement, I have completed about four coaching sessions, which I hope was evident when I had the honour of teeing off the ladies competition on Wednesday.
The driving force for my support of golf through this tournament which has not only featured children, caddies, professional men and women golfers from three of the golf clubs in Lagos State namely Ikoyi, Ikeja and Dolphin clubs; has bordered on two major considerations.
Firstly, it provides complete exercise for the entire body and tones up all the muscles, our minds also become very alert. Values such as respect for time, trust and integrity are also imbibed by the players. These are essential values needed to encourage and build a disciplined society.
On the other hand, the beautiful and serene environment in which the game of golf is played also plays a major role in my endearment towards the sport. The well manicured lawns, holes and regard for nature fall within the cardinal points of BRF's administration in achieving a greener Lagos.
At this point, I must commend Mrs. Ransome-Kuti and her team for a job well done in organizing and executing a very successful maiden edition of this tournament. It has provided a platform for children to showcase their talents. I hope this tournament would eventually go on to produce world class golfers who would in turn win many laurels for this nation.
Finally, I congratulate all the golfers that have participated in this tournament, I also congratulate the winners as I encourage us all to sustain interest in the game to help develop our character, improve our health and our environment.
Ladies and gentlemen, have a fun filled evening.
God bless you all.
Eko o ni baje o.
Her Excellency
Dame Emmanuella Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
