May 26, 2011 - Commissioning Of Oremeji Primary School II, Tolu School Complex, Ajegunle, (AJIF) Adopted By Airtel Communication Limited

I would like to recall one of the vital resolutions adopted at the 2nd Lagos State Education Summit held at the Expo Hall, Eko Hotel and Suite, Victoria Island on the 17th and 18th June, 2009; tagged "The role of government in education should be that of regulator, frame setter, standard setter, quality controller and motivator of Public –Private Community Partnership".

When the Policy of Public Private Partnership initiative was conceptualized by the Lagos State Government, little did we know that the seed would yield a bountiful harvest one of which we are witnessing today; that is, the adoption and completion of Oremeji Primary School 11.

The purpose of this partnership is basically to assist the Government in the task of delivering quality education in the State.

Lagos State Government in recent times has embarked on laudable programmes in the education sector. These include massive renovation and construction of new Classroom blocks; supply of free text books in core subject areas, provision of computers, furniture items, laboratory equipments, training and retraining of teachers, direct funding to Schools (Eko Project) among others.

Airtel Networks Limited has demonstrated in practical terms, what corporate social responsibility should be by not only adopting Oremeji Primary School II, here in Ajegunle but has also put in place a modern and well equipped edifice.

On behalf of the State Government, I hereby express my profound appreciation to the management of Airtel under the able leadership of Mr. Rajaan Swaarop for your magnanimity and assistance.

I am personally delighted that this beautiful structure has found its way into this populous city, Ajegunle. Two weeks ago, the State Government commissioned a newly constructed Christ Assembly Primary School. Alakoto, at a colourful ceremony also here in Ajegunle. The ultimate goal is to arrest the ugly trends of neglect this sector has suffered over the years.

I therefore seize this opportunity to appeal to other corporate Organizations and public spirited individuals that have genuine love for the development of our children to, as a matter of top priority, join us in this noble task of returning the past glory to our Public Schools.

Once again, I want to appreciate Airtel Networks Limited for your response to our invitation to partner with us in this assignment. This partnership has already fostered unity, understanding, harmonization of resources towards upgrading infrastructural development and also intensified qualitative education in the State. We shall continue to call on you, knowing fully well that, your support is our strength.

May I advise the pupils and management of Oremeji Primary School II, to see this property as theirs and it should be properly maintained.

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the State Government, I want to thank everybody present at this event.

Thank you once again and God bless you all.

Eko o ni baje o!

Her Excellency
Dame Abimbola Fashola
First Lady,Lagos State
