Feb 24, 2011 - Dame Fashola Bags Lagos City Poly Award, Challenges Graduands To Be Productive

First Lady of Lagos State, Dame Abimbola Fashola added another honour to her status recently when the first private polytechnic in the country, the Lagos City Polytechnic conferred on her a fellowship award.

The institution conferred on her Fellow of the Lagos City Polytechnic during its fifth convocation ceremony in which over 1,000 students graduated.

Responding, the First Lady used the occasion to advise the graduating students, urging them to use their skills and knowledge to change the country for better.

According to her, there is the need for every citizen to sacrifice by contributing the knowledge he acquired while in school to the development of the country without necessarily expecting personal gains.

She told them to always dream big and to ensure that they develop themselves to be employable in the labour market. "Education is not complete without sound moral and right attitude to fit into the larger world," she said.

Emphasizing personal values, she called on them to imbibe the spirit of honesty, to be God fearing and hard working in order to excel in their future endeavour.

She dedicated the fellowship award to the youths, as she commended the students and the polytechnic management for their unflinching support for the state government.

Other personalities that received awards included the former first lady of the state, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji.

Ikuforiji advocated for the re-ordering of the country's ethical values and priorities, saying this step would go a long way in changing every sector, including education.

In his presentation, "Enhancing the standard of education in Nigeria", Ikuforiji said that the purpose of education is to help a person to develop his natural talents to the fullest, adding that the government must begin to honour academics to encourage Nigerian students.
