Feb 23, 2011 - First Lady Takes Polio Immunisation To Churches, Mosques


Lagos State First Lady, Dame Abimbola Fashola has said that children immunisation exercise will be conducted in churches, mosques and market places so that more children can be immunised.

She also disclosed that the state had not recorded any case of polio disease in the last two years, following the effective immunisation exercise across the metropolis.

The First Lady said this during the flag-off ceremony of Integrated Measles campaign and national immunisation plus at Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, describing the record as an encouraging one.

According to her, the cases of polio and measles have been reduced because of the cooperation of the mothers and adequate sensitisation campaign the government had always provided.

However, she called on mothers not to relent but to always present their children for immunisation and treatment so that the aim of providing healthy society being envisaged by the government would not be defeated.

She said, "Let us prevent these diseases. Let us present children between the ages of zero and five for this immunisation."

As part of efforts to ensure that every child is immunised, Abimbola Fashola said that the exercise would now be conducted in churches, mosques and market places.

She said, "Health officers have been directed to visit the church and mosque where they can always meet the children and their mothers.

However, I still want to implore our mothers to always keep a hygienic environment and give the right nutrients to the children to keep them healthy."

Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Mr. Ayodele Adewale commended the state government and the first lady in particular for creating time to sensitise the mothers on the immunisation.

He described the exercise as one of the best projects of the state government to ensure that health services get to the grassroots people. "In the last few years, the local community has recorded no case of polio among the children," he said.
