I am delight to be here this morning to receive and commission on behalf of His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, Governor of Lagos State and the good people of Lagos State, Medical appliances and Laundry unit donated by Otunba (Dr.) Mathew Oyin Jolayemi, OFR, JP for the care of our children in this State and beyond. May I, on behalf of His Excellency congratulate you sir on your 70th birthday being celebrated by the donation of these medical appliances and laundry unit in support of the state government's efforts in child healthcare.
One of the challenges facing us as a people in the area of child health care is the high mortality rate and the need to do everything possible to reduce it to the barest minimum. The state government has not only recognized this but has also taken bold steps to address it through various policies and programmes that are geared towards ensuring the survival and healthy growth of every child right from the womb. These include the immunization programme, sensitization of mothers and care givers on best practices on child care, upgrading of child health care facilities and very importantly the construction of Mother and Child hospitals for the exclusive care of pregnant mothers and children.
It however needs to be emphasized that no government can achieve everything it desires for the people without the support, collaboration and partnership of well spirited individuals and corporate organizations. In Lagos State, the dividend of public private partnership has continued to manifest in some critical sectors including security, education, health and some other areas that have benefitted from the kind support and contributions of individuals and the private sector.
Today, the service delivery capacity of the Bronchogoscopy Pediatric Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital particularly in early detection of infection in children's lung is being enhanced by this donation. So also the Massey Street Children's Hospital, the beneficiary of a complete Laundry House that is equipped with giant industrial washing and drying machines for efficient and cost effective washing of bed linens used by the children.
Once again, I wish to express sincere appreciation of the government, the people and particularly the children who are the direct beneficiaries of these facilities to Otunba (Dr.) Mathew Oyin Jolayemi for his kind gesture and choosing to celebrate his 70th birthday in this very unique and remarkable way. Abraham Lincoln once said "And in the end, its not the years in your life that counts. It's the life in your years". Through these medical appliances, only God knows the number of children's lives that will be saved as a result of the enhanced unit capacity not only to diagnose more accurately but also timely.
May, I use this opportunity to encourage more of our well endowed citizens to give back to the society by supporting good causes through which their names will be written in Gold in the hearts of all generations.
I congratulate you sir, once again on your 70th birthday anniversary and pray that God almighty will grant you more years in good health and prosperity.
I wish you all merry xmas and a prosperous 2011.
Thank you and God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Dame Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
