Dec 14, 2010 - Lagos First Lady Inaugurates Bronchoscope Paediatric Machine At LASUTH

The first lady of Lagos State, Dame Abimbola Fashola on Monday inaugurated the Bronchoscope Paediatric equipment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital as she commended the donor, Otunba Oyin Jolayemi for his timely intervention.

The machine, which was presented to the hospital, was part of the activities to mark the 70th birthday anniversary of the renowned philanthropist, Otunba Jolayemi.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Fashola who represented her husband, the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, described the donation as a good example of Public Private Participation scheme created by the state government.

According to her, the government has procured various health facilities with absolute immunisation and sensitization processes but still needs the assistance of private bodies and individuals to move healthcare closer to the public.

She noted, "This donation of bronchoscope paediatric equipment is a good example of what the government has been clamouring for among the corporate organisations."

According to Dr. Falase who spoke on the use of the equipment, Bronchoscope machine is used to remove foreign material from the body of a patient.

He said that many children who accidentally swallowed materials such as pin or other metal objects could be treated, using bronchoscope.

He however called on government to do more, adding that the hospital would still need about N20 million to buy more of the equipment to provide effective care.

While reacting, the donor, Otunba Jolayemi said that it became necessary for him to assist the government because he had made his fame and wealth in Lagos State and was bent on giving back to the state.

He said, "I was in Lagos since the age of 13 and now I'm 70 years old. I think the best thing for me to do now is to give back to the state that had supported me over the years. That is why I have donated this little".
