The proceeds at this year National Women Conference will be spent to provide medical assistance to 20 cancer patients to the tune of N10 million and to complete the retiree Villa at Lekki, the Lagos State First Lady, Dame Emmanuella Abimbola Fashola has said.
She made this known during the 10th National Women Conference held at Eko Hotel and Suites on Wednesday, adding that the project is over 40 per cent completion.
According to Mrs. Fashola, the project is designed to be a model place of relaxation and recreation with state of the art facilities for senior citizens who have contributed much of their younger years to the growth and development of the state and country.
Beside this, the first lady said that part of the proceeds would be used to financially assist 20 cancer patients at their various stages of medical treatment.
She also mentioned that the proceeds from the previous conferences had been spent largely on the building of recreational/sports centres at Campus Square, Lafiaji, Sam Sonibare, Ojo-Oniyun, Oshodi, Anthony Village, Oworonsoki, Orile Agege and Ebute Metta.
"All these projects were executed from the conference fees and donations," she said.
Speaking on the theme of the conference, "Celebrating the passionate woman", Mrs. Fashola said that despite the multifaceted challenges, Nigerian women had remained committed to upholding the ideals and values of womanhood.
She said, "Nigerian woman sees no sacrifice too great to ensure a brighter and rewarding future for her children. Nigerian woman remains steadfast in the discharge of her responsibilities as wife and mother even as she pursues her dream of career fulfilment. The Nigerian woman can truly be described as a role model for the younger generation."
Commenting on the theme, the state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), said "Truly, if there is a glass ceiling to be shattered, Lagos women have broken many, and are sending the clearest possible message that whatever may remain is certainly attainable".
The Lagos Governor said with the kind of commitment deployed by the wives of the men who have served Lagos State in the preeminent office of the Governor, one will find the reason and understanding for the leadership role that the State continues to play in the development of Nigeria and Africa.
Continuing, Governor Fashola said this explains why the public service of Lagos State has a female Deputy Governor, a female secretary to the State Government, a female Deputy Speaker and an overwhelming majority of women in the body of Permanent Secretaries, among the Magistracy and the High Court bench, with a Judiciary led by a passionate woman Chief Judge.
Governor Fashola reiterated that the theme of this year's conference, which is "Celebrating the Passionate Woman", is not only an appropriate milestone but one which provokes very deep interrogation of the essence of womanhood and the passion that drives them.
He noted that it is only unflinching commitment, driven by the kind of passion that only women can have, that allows them to accept the absence of their life partners from home for long periods, bearing the pain, the loneliness, the long nights and pressures with the best kind of courage.
