The First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, last Tuesday, June 15, 2010, commissioned a Health Care Centre in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of the State with a plea to women in Lagos to take advantage of the health care facilities being provided by the government at both the State and Local Government levels in order to stem the tide of maternal and child mortality in the State.
Mrs. Fashola, who also commissioned a rehabilitated Marriage Registry and an event centre, said that the maternal and child care centres being commissioned all over the State are meant to bring effective and efficient healthcare delivery to the doorsteps of Lagosians.
She commended the Local Government Chairman, Mr. Ademola Doherty, for the developmental projects being carried out in the Local Government for the betterment of the people saying both the Marriage Registry and the Event Centre are projects meant to improve the social life of the people.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Local Government, Mr. Ademola Doherty said his administration is determined to improve the health conditions of the people of the Local Government Area in line with the Health Policy of the State Government.
He added that his administration embarked on rebuilding the Public Health Centres in the area "in a bid to reduce the unacceptable maternal and child mortality rate in the Local Government Area in particular and in Lagos State in General".
"Let me use this opportunity to call on the residents of our Local Government and the environs to patronize our facilities when the need arises instead of going long distances to seek medical help", the Chairman urged adding that the Marriage Registry was rehabilitated to uphold the sanctity of Marriage among the people.
Urging the people to also take advantage of the state-of–the-art facilities in the Event Centre, Doherty promised that his administration would continue to carry out more developmental projects for the benefit of the people adding, however, that this can only be possible if the people fulfill their civic obligations by paying their taxes and levies as and when due.
