Mar 17, 2010 - Mrs. Fashola Salutes Lagos Women On International Women’s Day
• “There is cause to celebrate in Lagos State”, she says

First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, Wednesday said women in Lagos State have cause to celebrate because of the priority the government in the State has placed on issues concerning the female gender.

Mrs. Fashola, who spoke at the Police College, Ikeja venue of this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration in the State, particularly pointed at the various Maternal and Childcare centres constructed across the State by the Government solely dedicated to women and children saying they are indications of the commitment of Government to issues of women and children.

“I am delighted that in Lagos State, this day has always been a day for celebration. It is not that we do not have our fair share of the challenges peculiar to women”, the First Lady said adding, “But over the year, Government has demonstrated genuine desire to accord women issues the priority attention they deserve”.

She commended the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and the State Executive Council especially the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Joke Orelope-Adefulire, for their commitment towards addressing the challenges of maternal and child mortality through the construction of Maternal and Childcare centres some of which have been completed and commissioned in various parts of the State.

“Our women must make good and effective use of these centres for their pre and post-natal care”, Mrs. Fashola advised adding that the essence is to ensure that no woman or child in the State is denied the necessary attention while pregnant or after birth.

In her remarks, the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan also congratulated women in Lagos and all over the world for the Day saying the need to accord women all necessary attention could not be over-emphasized given the important role they play in the society.

“It is a special day to celebrate women for the role they play in the society. Without women there will be no earth. Without you mothers, the earth will phase out”, the Deputy Governor said.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. (Mrs.) Joke Orelope-Adefulire commended the State Governor for all the women-friendly policies of his administration, saying the Government has, more than anything, demonstrated appreciation for the capacity of the female gender to perform in tasks thought to be the prerogative of men.

Government, she said, will continue to recognize and give pride of place to women in areas which gives them the opportunity to prove and fully utilize their God-given potentials.

Highlights of the event included a march past by women groups from the local governments and local council development areas in the State.

Earlier in the day, the First Lady attended the 53rd session of the International Women’s Society in Lagos.

Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Governor urged women all over the world to stand up for their rights both as individual both as individuals and as societies and groups saying what they cannot say, no one will say it for them.

“They have said we did not have what it takes and that if we venture out we will fall off the edge. But all these have been proved to be false”, the deputy Governor said.

She commended the founders and managers of the society both past and present for their immense contribution to the human society saying, “You are not just mothers to your children but mothers to all”.
