Feb 24, 2010 - 2nd Annual Nurses Scientific Conference

I felicitate with the entire members of the nursing profession in the State Health Service Commission, Ministry of Health and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital as you gather again to commence the 2nd annual Nurses Scientific Conference.

The theme for this year’s conference – Professional Effectiveness/Efficiency: Implication for Nurses is well thought out and very reassuring of the determination of the nursing family in the state service to deliver excellent services in line with current best practices within the profession.

It is a fact that nursing is a noble profession and a very essential and indispensable part of health care service. It is one profession that demands of its practitioners great sense of care and compassion in the discharge of their duties as was the dream of Florence Nightingale founder of modern nursing.

Nursing, like any other profession has undergone various stages of development in order to remain relevant and to keep pace with new discoveries and methods of doing things with one goal in mind – improved efficiency and effective service delivery. What this implies is that practitioners of any profession including nursing must continuously keep themselves abreast of current practice and development in the profession. This is the only way that a truly professional nurse can measure up to the expectation of Florence Nightingale who summarised the job of a nurse as putting the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him.

It is on this note, that I commend you for initiating this annual scientific conference which will afford you opportunity of comparing notes, sharing experiences and exchanging ideas on current happenings and challenges in the nursing profession.

I am greatly encouraged by the choice of your sub themes which focus on issues not only related directly to the practice of nursing but also touches on one of the challenges facing women and children in Nigeria and other developing nation, maternal and child mortality. It is my hope that at the end of this 3-day conference, you will be better empowered and equipped to contribute significantly to making the ongoing reform in the health sector a huge success.

Once again, I congratulate you as I am greatly honoured to declare the 2nd Annual Nurses Scientific Conference open.

Wishing you very rewarding deliberation.

Thank you and God bless you all.
