Jan 26, 2010 - Access Bank/Friends Africa Workplace Policy Workshop

I must commend the partnership of Access Bank and Friends Africa in organising this workshop with the theme “Work Policies” and the objectives of addressing issues that are critical to increasing and strengthening work place policies and programs on Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. There is no doubt about the fact that, Tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV/AIDS together constitute the greatest public health challenge to the human race particularly in sub Sahara Africa.

We cannot overemphasize the need for this workshop particularly when we consider the fact as shown by statistics that people in the productive age bracket constitute the majority falling victims of these diseases. The direct implications are loss of valuable man hours, diversion of scarce resources toward medical treatment among others is quite obvious.

As the engine of economic growth and provider of platform for social interaction in workplaces, private sector organisations have key role to play in addressing the challenges of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS through the adoption and implementation of comprehensive workplace health policies and programs.

It is my hope that the information, awareness and knowledge that will be shared at this workshop will inspire and increase participation of the private sectors through the adoption and implementation of the resolutions that will be arrived at; for improved accessibility and knowledge in the workplace of treatment and prevention of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Once again, I commend the partnership between Access Bank and Friends Africa as I wish you a successful and rewarding workshop.

Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
