Dec 9, 2009 - Lagos First Lady Feted As LEARN Youth Empowerment Programme Ends

Lagos First Lady, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola was the toast at the weekend at the Graduation Ceremony of the ICT Youth Empowerment Programme organized by the Lagos Empowerment and Research Network (L.E.A.R.N.).


The First Lady, who is also the Chairman of L.E.A.R.N., received accolades from students and teachers as well as the other guests and stakeholders even as the programme ended with pomp and pageantry.


No less than 1, 200 youths from the states skill acquisition centres across the state were graduated at the ceremony which also had in attendance the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan who represented the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN).


Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Governor said the programme was a demonstration of the State Government’s concern and commitment towards job creation in the State adding that the participants were not only given certificates but some start off grant to launch them into the business world.


According to the Deputy Governor, Information and Communication Technology has changed the world and the basic tool for that change is efficient and functioning computer system.


In his own remarks, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat praise the Chairman of L.E.A.R.N. for the role played by the Network to ensure the success of the programme.


He said the programme is a demonstration of the recognition by the Lagos State Government that Information Communication Technology has taken over the world and therefore its readiness to prepare the people, especially the youths, for the revolution.


Also peaking on behalf of participants and graduands, two representatives, a male and a female participant described the First Lady as a great mobilizer and role model adding that the ICT programme was a meal ticket for the graduands which will last for them all their lives.


Some of the highlights of the ceremony included dances and songs rendered by both graduands and pupils of primary schools in Lagos who also presented dance drama at the colourful occasion.


The occasion was rounded off with a thanksgiving service during which both the First Lady and the Deputy Governor read passages from the Holy Bible.
