As the three Save-Our-Souls (SOS) Villages in Nigeria celebrate their 60th anniversary, First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has called for more commitment on the part of individuals and organizations in order to sustain the growing number of orphans and destitute children in the country.
Mrs. Fashola, who spoke at the SOS Village Isolo venue of the celebration said the event offers an opportunity to reflect on the fate of so many of such children still roaming the street of the country and being subjected to all forms of abuse and social menace.
“As we celebrate six decades of life-changing care and support for orphan, abandoned and vulnerable children, let us reflect on the conditions of several other children in similar conditions, roaming our streets and being subjected to various forms of abuse and trafficking”, the First Lady said.
She added, “We must take a cue from the success story of the SOS Children’s Village and lend a helping hand in giving hope for a better future to children in need. A little care and support will make a big difference and society will be more peaceful and secure for all of us”.
Congratulating the management of the SOS Villages, the First Lady commended the vision of the founder of the founder in Nigeria who, according to her, was orphaned as a result of the World War 2 adding that his experience inspired him to found the Village to provide home, care and support for the orphan children.
“It is heart warming to note that through the establishment of this village, children whose birth circumstances and vulnerable conditions gave them no chance of living a meaningful life have become success stories and a light to this great institution. These children, who would have become a liability and social menace to the society, have witnessed a turn-around in their lives and thereby contributing to the development and progress of their country”, she said.
