Nov 25, 2009 - “Don’t Lose Touch With Home Country”, Lagos First Lady Tells Nigerian Women In Diaspora
First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, at the weekend urged Nigerian women in the Diaspora not to lose touch with their home country saying there are a lot to be done as individuals and as a body to uplift the life of those at home.
Mrs. Fashola, who spoke in Lagos at 7th Annual Scholarship Awards of the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia (NWAG), said this is expedient because the developmental changes facing developing countries, including Nigeria, is the country is enormous and we believe it cannot be left to government alone without the active collaboration and partnership with private organizations and kindhearted individuals both within and outside Nigeria.
“It is a collective responsibility because as Nigerians we are all stakeholders in the development of our country. Therefore we owe it a duty to do everything within our capacity to realize the country of our collective dream”, the First Lady said.
She commended the NWAG for their gesture of offering scholarships to female Nigerian undergraduates on yearly bases and also supporting orphanages in the country saying, “It is very heartwarming and reassuring that even though you are in the Diaspora, you have not lost touch with the realities particularly at home”.
Mrs. Fashola said such humanitarian gesture is also being extended the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) who through funds realized from their annual conferences, build social amenities like recreation centres for the use of the less privileged in society.
Rejoicing with the beneficiaries of the scholarship and the orphanages, Mrs. Fashola urged them to make judicious use of all that have been given them as a mark of appreciation for the humanitarian gesture of the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia.
She commended the NWAG President Mrs. Virginia George and the entire members of the Association for the humanitarian gesture saying their hand of support will go a long in enhancing the lives of the recipients.
On the immoralities going on in the universities as they concern the female undergraduates, Mrs. Fashola who lamented the situation, however, debunked the notion that the females are indulging in sexual immorality to raise money to support their education pointing out that more of those engaged in it come from very rich homes.
Earlier, President of the Association has said that the Association took the decision to offer scholarships to Nigerian female undergraduates after an encounter with some of the graduates told them that they were forced into prostitution in order to raise money to sponsor their education.
A total of 20 female undergraduates and three orphanages benefit from the humanitarian gesture.
