As the 9th National Women Conference organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) came to a close at the weekend, the State’s First Lady and Chairperson of COWLSO, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has called on Nigerian women in public service to strive to maintain the balance between the demands of public service and their family responsibilities.
Mrs. Fashola told the quality audience of women from across the country at the Expo Hall of the Ocean View Restaurant, Victoria Island venue of the three-day Conference that it is the only way to ensure the stability of the home.
She declared, “It is of utmost importance that we play our part to the best of our ability”, adding that the desirable qualities for a successful public life strongly include honesty, character, humility, transparency, accountability and the need to maintain a healthy balance between the demands of our public office and family responsibilities as wives and mothers.
“These responsibilities and their overriding importance for promoting a balanced, humane and secure society show commitment to all family spiritual, cultural and social values”, Mrs. Fashola said adding, “We should also keep in mind the very useful tips that will ensure our financial security in order to live a peaceful and fulfilled life in retirement".
The First Lady, who described the Conference as a huge success, gave all the glory to God who, according to her, “has crowned with success all our efforts from planning to implementation of this 9th Annual Women’s Conference”, adding that the Conference has afforded the participants a very rewarding experience which essentially has refreshing effect and has given all them global perspectives of those critical challenges which women must resolve to their advantage and to the progress of the society.
“Two days ago, when the Conference formally opened, we benefitted greatly from the very encouraging, motivating and inspiring thoughts of both our Special Guest of Honour, Air Commodore David Jang (Rtd.), Governor of Plateau State, and, of course, my darling husband, His Excellency Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the Governor of Lagos State, whose presence here today is the fourth COWLSO event he has attended personally within three weeks” the COWLSO Chairperson said.
She said the Committee was truly inspired by assurances from the two governors that the Committee would not be left alone “to shoulder the heavy burden of resolving those fundamental challenges which we face as women with great and largely unharnessed potentials”, adding, “While we note with gladdened heart these assurances which we expect will be translated into reality, we have been reminded by our distinguished resource persons that we must do our best to play our part well”.
Commending the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony, Obong Godswill Akpabio, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State for honouring the Committee’s invitation, the First Lady said the success achieved by the Committee would have been more difficult without the support, encouragement and goodwill of some of its friends.
The Committee later presented Certificates of Appreciation to Mrs. Bimbo Oloyede, Chief (Mrs.) Gbenga Fowler and Chivita Nigeria Limited whom the First Lady described as Friends of the Committee, for their continued support of the Committee in carrying out its programmes.
