• As Oworonsoki Recreation Centre is commissioned
First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola Wednesday enjoined Lagosians to take imbibe the culture of exercise and relaxation as a means to both prolong their lives and protect themselves from diseases.
Mrs. Fashola, who spoke at the commissioning of the Oworonsoki Recreation Centre particularly, asked youths and community leaders in the State to take advantage of the various sporting and recreational facilities now being built in various communities across the State to engage themselves in useful sport and human capacity development.
She described the Oworonsoki Recreation Centre as one of the dividends of the 2007 and 2008 National Women Conference adding that the second project from the proceeds of the two conferences in the Orile Agege Recreation Centre also due to be commissioned by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) later this week.
The First Lady said apart from playing football and basketball, professionals within the Oworonsoki community could organize workshops, seminars, for instance on HIV Awareness, civic responsibilities, vocational education and training programmes that will empower, enlighten, educate and be informative for the youths.
According to Mrs. Fashola, the centre, which is to serve the relaxation and recreational needs of people within the Oworonsoki environment, is equipped with a football field, a Grand Stand, a basketball court, a GYM, Children’s playing arena, sitting area for the elderly and a hall.
Appealing to members of the community to protect and take care of the facilities in the Centre, the First Lady declared, “Let me emphasize that this facility is for the people of this community. It is your responsibility to ensure that this Centre and its surroundings are kept clean at all times”.
She thanked the people of the area, particularly the Oba of Oworonsoki, for their support and encouragement saying the enthusiasm shown in the project by the Royal Father was a great source of motivation to members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Government Officials (COWLSO), initiators of the project.
Also acknowledging the support and contributions of well meaning individuals and corporate organizations in making the project a reality, the First Lady enjoined the Royal Father to champion the use of the facility for computer literacy programmes for the youths and the not-so-young.
She also appealed to the Governor to approve the provision of two power generating sets for the two centres, saying this would greatly enhance the capacity of the facilities to serve the needs of the people.
