The three-day conference, which is organized yearly by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), will as usual hold at the Expo Hall of Ocean View Resort in Victoria Island.

Making the announcement Monday while briefing Government House Correspondents at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre Alausa, Ikeja, the First Lady said the Conference, which closes on Friday, October 30, would brainstorm on for major topics including Managing Public Life, Re-Inventing Family Value, The Woman Politician and Preparing for Retirement.

According to Mrs. Fashola, four distinguished women, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika (Founder and Chairman, The Chair Centre, Lagos), Mrs. Iyabo Ladipo, (CEO, Retrieving the Value Ltd & Double Portion Ltd., Hon. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Mrs. Alsu Fisher (CEO A & Ace Business Services Nigeria Ltd.) will respectively lead the discussions.

The First Lady said one of the highpoints of the opening ceremony of this year’s event would be the presentation of the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award to “the woman who, by her exemplary achievements, has distinguished herself and has also contributed to the realization of the ideals and objectives of COWLSO”, adding, however, that the recipient of this year’s award would be announced during the opening ceremonies.

Reiterating that apart from serving as a forum to discuss women affairs, the conference also provides opportunity for COWLSO to raise funds through conference fees and donations, Mrs. Fashola announced that such monies raised last year were used to construct two recreation centres in Oworonsoki and Orile-Agege respectively adding that the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) will commission the projects on October 14 and 29 respectively.

The First Lady said part of the proceeds of last year’s conference was also used in supporting about eleven women with various Breast Cancer issues for Radiotherapy and surgery.

Expressing appreciation to members of the press for the support they gave to the Committee through publicizing its activities, particularly the 8th edition of the Conference, Mrs. Fashola also appealed to them to give this year’s edition even better coverage.

This National Women Conference, organized yearly by COWLSO since 2001, has served and still serves as a veritable instrument by which the Committee raises fund yearly for the execution of its projects aside from serving as a forum for discussing issues concerning women.

Also the themes of the various conferences which are usually put together by a National Women Conference Planning Sub-Committee under the leadership a chairperson usually reflect the Committee’s vision and objective and specifically address topical issues that are at the core of women development in the country and even beyond.

While the theme for the 2007 Conference was ‘Setting your Goals, Making it happen’, as a further call for self-motivation and actualization, the 2008 Conference challenged the individual woman to declare her true identity in ‘Woman: Who are you?’
