Sep 5, 2009 - Closing Of 2009 Learn Summer School

It is my pleasure to welcome our Special Guest of Honour, Her Excellency, my very dear sister, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, Deputy Governor of Lagos State to this ceremony marking the formal closing of the 3rd Summer School organised by Lagos Empowerment and Resource Network (LEARN). I wish to use this opportunity to once again register our sincere appreciation for your support, encouragement and motivation which has contributed immensely to the success achieved so far.

Special welcome also goes to the Chairman of this occasion, Engr. Wale Odufuwa, our friends and distinguished guests who have honoured us with their presence today.

Lagos Empowerment And Resource Network was established two years ago as an NGO with special focus on youth development. Our vision is to contribute to the collective efforts of grooming tomorrow’s leaders to be confident, self sufficient and socially responsive through education, vocational skill training and recreation. This summer school, the 3rd edition of which is being closed formally today is one of the major programmes through which we are working towards achieving this vision.

I am happy to note that since the commencement of this programme, the response has been encouraging and impressive. Due to this, we had to increase the number of centres for this summer school to 6 districts to be able to accommodate the over 3000 students that registered.

During the six weeks programme, the students were taught basic subjects like English, Mathematics, Civic

Duties, Sex education, and vocational skills such as catering, barbing, hairdressing, event decoration and Arts and Crafts. In addition to all these, the students also went on excursion to places of interest such as DN Meyer Plc, National Aviation Handling Company Plc, Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Indomie Foods, Sweet Sensation and Honeywell Superfine Food.

All of these we believe are very essential ingredients needed to prepare the youths for the challenges of the 21st century and also grow to become very useful and responsible citizens. As we close this edition of our summer school programme today, we are confident that these promising young boys and girls are leaving better exposed, richer in experience and greatly empowered to aim for the best in their academics and other endeavours.

I need to also mention that this particular programme made very good use of the book titled “17 Secrets of High Flying Students” written by Mr. Fela Durotoye who will also be speaking to the students in the course of this programme. The book is a great piece of work which I believe every young person aspiring for success must have as a companion for motivation and inspiration.

Before I end this address, I wish to commend all members of LEARN team for a great job well done. I appreciate your passion, hardwork and sacrifice which were demonstrated from the planning to the execution stage of this programme. My special appreciation also goes to all our volunteers particularly our skill providers, Administrative support staff, Cleaners and Sports facilitators who have contributed immensely to the success of this programme.

Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to the following organisations for their support: LTV/Eko FM, Classic Beverages, Lagos State Ministry of Works, Sweet Sensation, Honeywell Superfine foods (makers of O’ Noodles), Promisador Nig. Plc (makers of Cowbell chocolate), DMT Mobile Toilets and the Lagos State Transport team from the Public Service Office. We are very grateful.

Your Excellency, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, once again, I welcome you all.

God bless you

Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
