Jun 29, 2009 - First Lady Hosts One-Day Gov, Says “The Experience Will Make You A Better Person”

First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, on Thursday hosted the 2008 One-Day Governor of the State Lagos, Miss Adesopo Olaide and her One-Day Cabinet saying the experience would make them better persons in society.

The First Lady, who spoke at the Lagos House Marina venue of the reception, congratulated the One-Day Governor and her cabinet for coming tops at the Spelling Bee Competition which enabled them to have the opportunity to act as Executive Council of the State for one day, adding that the experience would help them dream big and strive to achieve their dreams.

“The experience will make you a better person. It will make you dream big and strive to achieve your dream”, she told the One-Day Governor and her Cabinet, adding that it would also boost their confidence to enable them express themselves anywhere they find themselves.

Promising to follow up their progress in life and to support them whenever necessary, the First Lady prayed that God would guide and protect the One-Day Governor and members of her One – Day Cabinet and to support them in their future endeavour

Speaking on her NGO, the Lagos Empowerment and Resource Network (LEARN) programme, the First Lady said the idea is to impact good values in students in order to boost their self-esteem and confidence, adding that the programme also offers the children alternative learning skills to enable them pursue other areas of their passion.

According to her, “The programme enables the students to build up self confidence in other to be able to stand up and express themselves freely wherever they are. It also inculcates in them that positive attitude which helps them face the challenges of life”.

“It is not all about academics. While attending to your academics, you can also develop your skill wherever your passion is – sewing, photography, braiding, fashion design and so on”, the First Lady said.

She revealed that no less than 600 students in each of the six Education Districts of the State will participate in this year’s summer programme which, according to her, will involve camping for six week starting in August.

The First Lady, who said the programme was being carried out for the first time in all the six Education Districts of the State, explained that it has been limited to few local government areas in the past because of lack of fund, adding that the after-school programme is currently limited to only one District - Surulere - for the same reason.

Earlier, the One-Day Governor had commended Mrs. Fashola for initiating the Lagos Empowerment and Resource Network (LEARN) programme which she described as very laudable. She however asked the First Lady to throw more light on the programme and why it is restricted to few Local Government Areas in the State.

The One-Day Governor and her Cabinet members were later hosted to a Lunch by the Fist Lady.
