Today in Lagos State, we are celebrating a new initiative in the campaign against breast cancer with the introduction of Free Breast Cancer Awareness Mobile Clinic, a major focus of the Cadbury Bournvita Mama’s Week being flagged off today. As you all know, breast cancer has continued to pose a serious health challenge to women despite the fact that a simple process which could lead to early detection, will make a whole lot of difference in saving precious lives.
It is against this backdrop that I would like to commend the management of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. for initiating this novel idea which is the first of its kind not only in Lagos State but also in Nigeria.
This initiative will offer ultra sound scan, counselling services to women at various locations in the State and will also offer free mammogram for 100 women in the media. Cadbury Bournvita has demonstrated its interest in not only being a nourishing and caring companion in every household but also in contributing towards providing quality health service to mothers.
As a mother, I deeply appreciate this initiative as it recognises the vital role mothers play in the family and the nation at large. It will greatly complement the screening and awareness programme of the State Government which was initiated in 2006 to provide opportunities for women to be screened and educated on the danger and safety measures against breast cancer. I therefore encourage all women to take advantage of this weeklong free breast awareness mobile clinic which begins tomorrow to Saturday 28th March, 2009.
Let me use this opportunity to appreciate Genevieve and Care Organisation Public Enlightenment (C.O.P.E) for their collaboration with Cadbury Bournvita on this initiative.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen in the spirit of the celebration of motherhood, please join me in reciting one stanza of that evergreen poem by Ann Taylor as a tribute to all mothers.
Who sat and watched my infant head
When sleeping on my cradle bed
And tears of sweet affection shed
My mother
I thank you for your kind attention. God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
