Dec 18, 2008 - Investiture As Patron Of National Council Of Women Societies, Lagos State Chapter

I feel greatly honoured and humbled by today’s formal investiture as Patron of the National Council of Women Societies, Lagos State Chapter.

Prior to this day, and since the inauguration of the present administration on 29th May, 2007, I have had very interesting and exciting relationship with the leadership and members of NCWS Lagos State. Although, I am impressed by what I have seen so far, I envisage a lot of challenges which the organisation must overcome in order to effectively play the role of an umbrella body for women societies and organisations in Lagos State.

To achieve the dream of the founding mothers as well as ability to support ourselves to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, we must be united and foster mutual understanding amongst women.

Today, as wives and mothers, women, both young and old, are also faced with health challenges such as HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, cervical cancer, maternal death among others. Economically, women also account for a greater percentage of those below the poverty line.

These and other several developmental issues require us to come together and work towards achieving a common purpose of improving the conditions of our gender. We need to develop strategies and play active roles as major stakeholders in ensuring the success of all women-related programmes initiated by the government. We need to form a partnership with the government and other relevant organisation to ensure that women are enlightened, educated and properly informed about matters that affect us and to take full advantage of every opportunity that exist.

Again, let me emphasise that it would be difficult for NCWS to achieve this objective if we are not united and do not see ourselves as sisters. DO YOU AGREE WITH ME THAT WE ARE SISTERS AND CAN WE BE UNITED? ‘YES WE ARE, AND CAN BE UNITED’.

My sincere appreciation goes to the President, Princess Ayodele Disu, members of the Executive and the entire members of the National Council for Women Societies family, Lagos State Chapter.

Once again, I want to thank you most sincerely and promise to do everything within my capacity to assist in taking NCWS Lagos State to greater heights.

I wish every one Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

God bless you all.
