On behalf of His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN the Governor and the good people of Lagos State, I have the honour and privilege to welcome most warmly to Epe, Lagos State, Her Excellency, Hajia Turai Umar Musa Yar’Adua, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Grand Patron, Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation, on this historic occasion marking the formal opening of a 5-Day Free Eye Camp.

 

We are particularly delighted because this would mark Your Excellency’s first official visit to Lagos State since your darling husband, His Excellency, Alhaji Umar Musa Yar’Adua GCFR, assumed office as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

 

I also welcome Her Excellency, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan, wife of the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Your Excellencies my colleagues, wives of Governors. Special welcome also goes to my sisters: wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, wife of the Chief of Army Staff, wife of the Inspector General of Police and other distinguished guests on the entourage of the First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

 

We feel greatly honoured by the opportunity given to us by Her Excellency, Hajia Turai Umar Musa Yar’Adua to collaborate with WAYEF to host this event for the South West region of Nigeria including Edo, Delta and Benue States.

 

As Your Excellency would recall, events leading to this day commenced about five months ago when Your Excellency intimated me with this initiative and expressed the desire for Lagos State to serve as the host State for the South West zone.

 

We accepted this challenge with determination to ensure that nothing short of success is achieved for the benefit of our people.

 

It therefore gives us great satisfaction to note that by this effort, we are playing a crucial role in facilitating a process that will assist five hundred people overcome the challenges of glaucoma and cataract free of charge.

 

I am happy to inform Your Excellency that in Lagos State, blindness prevention through screening, surgery and provision of eye glasses is a major programme from which a lot of our people have benefited. Given the increasing challenge and the desire to reach as many people as possible, this kind gesture is most welcomed and highly appreciated as it will complement all that we have been doing in our various States in this regard.

 

Going by the amount of efforts that have been put into the planning process, I have no doubt in my mind that by the grace of God, this programme will be a huge success.

 

Finally, Your Excellency, please permit me to express my profound appreciation to all the medical personnel especially our visiting medical doctors from foreign countries who have volunteered their time and expertise for the benefit of our people. I also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the planning committee and everyone who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success.

 

Once again, I welcome Your Excellency, Hajia Turai Umar Musa Yar’Adua, my colleagues and distinguished ladies and gentlemen.
