It gives me great pleasure to join the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, invited guests especially children from various schools here present in celebrating this year’s World Environment Day. As we all know, this day was set aside to draw global attention to environmental issues and remind ourselves of the need to promote and encourage responsible and sustainable exploitation of natural resources.
I am particularly delighted to note the efforts of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in ensuring that children are getting more exposed to issues of the environment. This coincides with the thinking of the State government which recently launched Climate Change Clubs in Schools with a view to inculcating in them right attitudes toward the environment.
In the past few yeas, the issue of climate change, the depletion of the ozone layer among others have continued to attract increased global attention. The theme of this year’s celebration: “CO2, Kick the Habit – Towards a Carbon Free Economy” could therefore not have come at a better time. The increasing volume of carbon dioxide also known as green house gas has become a major concern because of its direct effect on the atmospheric temperature.
This situation calls for a concerted effort on our part to reduce and if possible stop the use of carbon emitting activities. We need to continue to enlighten the public on the need to change our attitude and embrace habits that promotes a healthy and sustainable environment. The present administration has demonstrated its determination and commitment in this direction through the various projects that have been initiated to change the face of the environment. The least we can do as individuals is to support this effort by being more conscious of the effect of our actions on the environment no matter how insignificant it may seem to us.
I commend the Nigerian Conservation Foundation for the sustained efforts and commitment to promoting conservation and environmental protection in Nigeria. I want to use this opportunity to call on everyone especially the young ones to be more environmental conscious in everything that we do.
Finally, I want to join NCF in thanking everyone especially corporate organisations that have contributed to making this event a success.
I thank you for your kind attention and wish you all a rewarding celebration.
God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
