Feb 22, 2008 - The Thinking Day Celebration
It gives me great pleasure to join the Nigerian Girl Guides Association Lagos State Branch in celebrating this year’s Thinking Day being the first Guides event I am attending after my formal investiture as the State Patron a couple of weeks ago.
Today, we celebrate the joint birthday of the founder of Guiding, Lord Baden-Powell and his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell. The significance of this celebration is that it gives us an opportunity to appreciate the great efforts of this wonderful couple, the positive impact they have made on the lives of millions of people all over the world through guiding. Very importantly, this day also provides us yet another opportunity to reflect on the state of guiding today and the level we hope to take it tomorrow. This is the best tribute we can pay to the memories of the founders whose contributions we are celebrating today.
The theme of this year’s thinking day celebration “Water” is very instructive considering the importance of water as a necessity in the lives of every living creatures. I am informed that this theme was particularly chosen to draw attention to the role water plays in sanitation and the health of girls and young women in all parts of the world.
My message to you all therefore is to be mindful of the way we use water in our everyday life. We must avoid wastage and always be willing to support efforts towards making water more available for our people.
Finally, I want to use this opportunity to appeal to parents and guardians to encourage their female children to join the Guide Movement. Guiding is very beneficial to the total development of the girl child in terms of the discipline and life skills that are inculcated in members to meet the challenges of life. I also enjoin all guides and Brownies to invite and encourage your friends to become members.
I congratulate the State Commissioner Mrs. Margaret Shobayo and all members of the Guide family in Lagos State on the celebration of this year’s Thinking Day.
I pray that God almighty will spare our lives to witness many more of this day.
I thank you for your kind attention, God bless you all.
