Dec 12, 2007 - Inauguration Of Committee On Taking Religion To The Streets To Combat Social Ills

On behalf of myself and members of the Committee on Taking Religion to the Streets to Combat Social Ills which has just been inaugurated, I want to express our appreciation to His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Governor of Lagos State for considering us worthy of this appointment. We feel truly humbled by the opportunity this appointment has given us to serve and also challenged by the huge task which we have been called upon to perform.

 

We commend the State Government for adopting this initiative which we are convinced will greatly complement other policies and programmes currently being implemented to address the challenge of social ills especially among the young ones in the society.

 

We particularly commend the state government for recognising the important role religion can play as an instrument of social reformation. The ultimate goal of every religion is to promote peace and social harmony among all people in the society. The teaching and tenets of every faith also emphasise the obligation of the society especially those who are privileged towards the less privileged. This, we believe is a fundamental teaching which if put into practise will, to a very large extent promote greater sense of belonging and create no room for the emergence of some of the social ills that have continued to pose serious threat to our collective peace, progress and general well being.

 

Your Excellency, it is with utmost sense of responsibility that we accept the task that you have put before us. We pledge our commitment to ensure that this responsibility as spelt out in the committee’s terms of reference is discharged to the best of our ability.

 

Once again, we thank Your Excellency for the confidence reposed in our ability and also use this opportunity to seek the support and cooperation of all stakeholders especially religious organisations towards ensuring the realisation of the objectives which informed the setting up of this committee.
