Gentlemen of the Press, good morning.
I welcome you all to this media briefing organised to sensitize, through you, members of the public on the forthcoming 7th National Women Conference. Before I proceed, let me use this opportunity to thank you all and the respective media organisations you represent for the support and cooperation which COWLSO has always enjoyed from you with regards to the wide publicity you have given our programmes, in particular, the National Women Conference.
As you are aware, this year’s conference will be the first to be organised under my leadership as Chairman of Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials. I am confident that I can count on your support and cooperation in our commitment to complement government efforts at enhancing the welfare of the people of Lagos State.
The National Women Conference will by God’s grace commence on Wednesday 31st October, 2007 and end on Friday 2nd November, 2007 at the Banquet Hall, Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. His Excellency, Alhaji Isa Yuguda, the Governor of Bauchi State is our Special Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony and will declare the conference open on Wednesday 31st October, 2007. Our Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony, who will also declare the conference closed on Friday 2nd November, 2007 is His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam, Governor of Benue State.
The theme for the conference is “Setting Your Goals, Making it Happen”. Topics to be discussed under this theme by carefully chosen resource persons who are distinguished and accomplished professionals in both public and private sectors are:
(i) Politics as a passion for women – by Mrs. Tolu Lewis Tamoka, of UNIFEM;
(ii) Civility, Etiquette, the Lady – Mrs. Ifeoma Idigbe, Managing Director New Bridge Final School;
(iii) Building your personal wealth – Financial Management – by Mrs. Nimi Akinkugbe; (Head Private Banking, IBTC Chartered Bank)
(iv) Managing Your time is Managing your Life – by Mrs. Mobola Johnson, Managing Director ACCENTURE
(v) Discovering your potentials and living it – by Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, CEO Sokoa/Chair Centre;
(vi) General Health – Well being of the Woman between 30-60 years old – by Dr. Omowunmi Bakare, Lagos State Ministry of Health;
(vii) Domestic Violence and Sexual harassment – by Chief (Mrs.) Joy Ezeilo, (Activist);
Those who are conversant with previous editions of this annual conference will recall that it has been our tradition to give the inspirational woman award to a woman who has distinguished herself in her chosen career and also contributed to the realization of the ideals of COWLSO. This 7th National Women Conference year’s conference will not be an exception. The recipient of this year’s award will be unveiled at the opening ceremony. In addition, certificates of appreciation will be given to two distinguished Nigerian women in recognition of the support they have given COWLSO and the honour they have brought to womanhood. The certificate presentation will be performed by the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony.
Distinguished gentlemen of the press, over 500 Nigerian women from different states of the federation and with diverse backgrounds and experiences both in the public and private sectors are expected to participate at this year’s conference which promises to be most exciting and highly rewarding.
I will therefore use this opportunity to enjoin women to register and participate at this conference.
