First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola (M), at the opening ceremony of the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre.Sep 18, 2007 - Opening Ceremony Of Afterschool Graduate Development Centre
One of the major challenges facing us a people especially policy makers at all levels of government is the growing rate of unemployment among our youths including school leavers and graduates. In spite of the various initiatives that have been developed in the past, the gap between the number of skilled and trained manpower being turned out from our educational institutions on a yearly basis and the available job opportunities seem to be getting wider.
We all know the effects of this situation which are being manifested in various forms, the most worrisome of which is the level of insecurity as a result of armed robbery incidents and other anti social activities. There is therefore the urgent need by all stake holders to develop initiatives that will assist in making our youths gainfully engaged and achieving full realisation of their potentials. At this point in our national life, we need to harness to the fullest every human capital at our disposal, because therein lies the prosperity of our economy and our people.
It is on this note that I want to commend the initiative of Mrs. Ibukunoluwa Awosika for establishing the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre that is being opened today. I am informed that AGDC will focus on the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes which will assist participants in making informed decision about their life and careers and enable them excel in the 21st century work and business environment. I wish to note that this project could not have come at a better time especially in Lagos State when the administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN has demonstrated its commitment to addressing the issues of unemployment and insecurity in the State.
Let me at this point enjoin our youths and institutions in all sectors of our economy to take advantage of this Centre in order to add value to their academic qualifications and also enhance workforce productivity.
Finally, I congratulate the Chairman of AGDC, Mrs. Ibukunoluwa Awosika and also commend her and everyone who has contributed to making this project a reality. It is my hope and prayer that this social enterprise will achieve its laudable vision for the overall benefit of our country and Lagos State in particular.
I thank you for your kind attention. God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
