I welcome most warmly everyone here present and also thank you all for honouring the invitation to be part of this occasion. Your presence here today gives me a strong assurance of your support and collaboration to make this initiative a success.
During the electioneering campaign which led to the election of my husband, His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN as Governor of Lagos State, I had the opportunity through various interactions with different shades of people to have a better appreciation of the human capacity potentials which we are blessed with especially among our youths. I was also convinced in my mind that these potentials especially the abundant energies and talents of the youths could be developed and positively channelled only if the enabling environment and opportunities are created.
It was in a bid to contribute my own quota to this process that the decision to organise this first summer school programme for students under the umbrella of Lagos Empowerment And Resource Network (LEARN), a non-governmental organisation was taken.
I want to congratulate all the students within the Surulere axis who responded to the call to participate in the 4 week summer programme. I have no doubt that you have all benefited from the various events you were taken through.
The essence of this programme is to make you better citizens or individuals and inculcate in you positive values and attitudes while developing your self confidence. All these are very essential ingredients that will help you become responsible citizens that we will be proud of. As you conclude this maiden edition of the summer school programme, I enjoin you to put into practice everything that you have been taught. I also congratulate those of you who have been recognised for your outstanding performance during the programme.
Let me at this point appeal for the support and assistance of well meaning individuals and corporate organisations for subsequent editions of LEARN summer programme. I count very much on your partnership and collaboration to enable us extend this programme to other parts of the State.
Finally, I want to thank the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Temitope George, members of the Lagos Collective, members of LEARN Working Committee and all other LEARN members.
I would also like to seize this opportunity to appreciate our partners; the Resource Persons and Volunteers who devoted their quality time without any remuneration for 4 weeks.
I would also like to appreciate Mrs. Kamson, CEO, Sweet Sensation, Nigerian Bottling Company and Indomie Noodles for believing in us and wanting to associate with LEARN. I say a big thank you to you all.
I thank you for your kind attention, God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
