Jun 15, 2007 - Public Lecture Tagged “Africa And The Problems Of Refugees” Organised By African Upliftment
This evening as we come together on the occasion of today’s public lecture tagged: “Africa and the Problems of Refugees” which I am informed is organized to inform, educate and focus the necessary attention of members of the public on the plight of refugees and the interest of the international community and sensitize them on how to manage and prevent future refugee crisis in the continent.
I with to use this opportunity to thank Mr. Gaious Ben, the President and Members of African Upliftment for the invitation to be a part of this important event and commend you for taking this bold and positive initiative geared towards evolving a sustainable solution to refugee crises in Africa.
It is most disturbing that in spite of past efforts of concerned individuals, organization and government, refugee crises is still an unfortunate occurrence. This situation is no doubt unacceptable and a permanent solution must therefore be through a collective effort of all concerned. I am happy to note that the event of today is a clear demonstration of the determination on the part of those who have had a dose of this sad experience, to take their destiny in their own hands by leading this educational and awareness campaign.
I therefore enjoin everyone to support this laudable initiative by African Upliftment by ensuring that the message of today’s lecture is replicated for the general education of all.
I must however emphasize that in order to achieve the desired result, we must all resolve not to stop at the level of mere awareness of the problems and solutions but rather taking decisive actions that will bring about a practical solution to refugee crisis.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, while I am optimistic that the erudite speakers at this public lecture will do justice to the various topics that will be delivered here today. I hope we will all take this lecture as a very important step in the process of resolving the crises and not an end in itself.
In conclusion, while I thank you for your kind attention, I wish you all a rewarding and successful lecture.
God bless you all.
Her Excellency
Mrs. Abimbola Fashola
First Lady of Lagos State
